James McMurtrie was born in Stawell and spent his early years working on his parents farm and exploring the Grampians bushland. Upon graduation from Ballarat Grammar, James completed a Bachelor of Art, majoring in hot glass at the Chislom Institute of Technology in 1992. Over the following two years , he then worked as an assisstant for respected glass artists Don Wreford and Richard Morrell. In 1996, James established himself as a professional glass artist under the name Greenhills Glass setting up at the family farm, he successfully ran and maintained his hot glass studio and began incorporating steel and stone within his repertoire of mediums that he can work with. In 2002 James designed and constructed a purpose built hot glass studio and commercial gallery space on his property in Pomonal situated in the foothills of the Grampians National Park, where he continues to create one off sculptural and functional glass pieces. James produces high quality commercial production and exhibition glass to a wide variety of respected galleries through out Australia. James’ production range includes bowls, vases, plates and bottles, these are made with function in mind while using contemporary colour and design that can fit into any interior space.
